At Chromacolour, we are constantly inspired by how our customers use traditional media to push the boundaries of movement. Today, we are shining a spotlight on a long-time customer whose work is a breath-taking blend of two disciplined worlds: Karen Kelly.

Karen is not just an animator; she is a martial artist, a designer, and a storyteller. Her work, which you can explore at karenkellyanimator.com, represents a unique intersection where the "East meets West," combining "Old School" hand-drawn animation with the explosive energy of martial arts.

The Power of the Hand-Drawn Frames

In an age of digital shortcuts, Karen remains proud of "Going Old Skool," and creating hand-drawn animation. And of course it's this traditional animation process where our Chromacolour products feel most at home.

Karen's "Drawings from the Dojo" really stands out. As an active practitioner of Shidokan Karate and Judo, she has an innate understanding of human mechanics. When she draws a flying kick or a Judo throw, she isn't just guessing the physics, she has felt the weight and the momentum in her own body.

A Palette Inspired by Japan

Karen’s aesthetic is deeply influenced by Japanese culture, from traditional kimono fabrics to the serene art of Shodo (calligraphy). Her paintings often feature vibrant, high-contrast colours that capture the intensity of kumite (sparring) while maintaining the elegance of traditional Japanese design.

Her use of colour is wonderful, whether she's painting "Samurai Cats" or storyboarding high-octane action design inspired by Hong Kong cinema, there is a warmth and texture to her work that only comes from a dedicated use of physical pigments.

Beyond the Animation Desk

Karen’s creativity doesn't stop at the lightbox. Her portfolio spans across:

  • Action Design Storyboarding: Mapping out complex fight choreography for film.

  • Martial Arts Portraits: Capturing the spirit of master teachers and fellow students.

  • Textile Inspiration: Recycling her artistic visions into dressmaking and Japanese-inspired fabrics.

We are incredibly proud to support artists like Karen, who keep the "hand-drawn" spirit alive. Her work reminds us that animation is more than just moving pictures; it is the study of life, discipline, and the beauty of a line in motion.

Chromacolour Pegbar in action - Art by Karen Kelly

Karen has kindly put together a few words about Chromacolour:

“My brief was to create something beautiful using old school hand drawn animation techniques.

To put my project into motion, I called Chromo Colour as they have decades of experience serving the animation community with their products.

They were friendly and helpful with my enquiries offering advice, product recommendations and bespoke services such as the sizing and registering of fine art paper for use on an animation peg bar.

Chroma Colour went above and beyond to find products and solutions to assist my creative vision and continue to be a much valued part of my moving art project.

Also their products are packaged with great care to arrive safely, thank you Chroma Colour for everything!"
